On Going Training

Certification Requirement

The principal of On-Going Training is a vital component of SKGABC certification. As learning opportunities should not end at the completion of a training course, the Alliance strives to ensure all members continually develop their skills and knowledge base throughout their careers. On-Going Training allows leaders to stay abreast of evolving industry standards and finesse their paddling and safety skills, thereby promoting safety across the industry.

Since 1994, the SKGABC has facilitated On-Going Training through running Guides Exchanges, endorsed training courses, and Level Two and Three Exams.

As the scope of SKGABC membership has grown, the options to satisfy the On-Going Training requirement should also evolve. The On-Going Training requirement should become flexible enough to allow for members of diverse situations (geographic location, availability, etc) to satisfy the underlying principal behind the requirement; continued professional development.

On-Going Training can be satisfied for a THREE (3) year period by any of the following SKGABC Activities:

  • SKGABC Guides Exchange
  • SKGABC Endorsed Course
  • SKGABC Level Two or Three Exam

On-Going Training can be satisfied for a THREE (3) year period by any of the following alternative activities:

  • Recognized training course endorsed by another certifying body

    • Examples: Paddle Canada / American Canoe Association / British Canoe Union / etc sea kayak courses
  • Regional paddling symposium or event

    • Examples: Pacific Paddling Symposium / Golden Gate Sea Kayak Symposium / East Coast Kayak Symposium / Lumpy Waters Kayak Symposium
  • Ground Search and Rescue Training
  • Swiftwater Rescue Training

On-Going Training can be satisfied for a ONE (1) to THREE (3)* year period by any of the following:

*At the discretion of the Executive Director (or Certification Committee) duration of certification requirement extension is based upon quality, intensity, and length of training.

  • 'In-house' skill / rescue training put-on by sea kayak company
  • University or technical training which can be directly applied to sea kayak guiding
  • Other training opportunities. Contact Executive Director to discuss.

Submitting On-Going Training Completion:

Participation in SKGABC endorsed activities is automatically recorded.

To submit non-SKGABC training, please email proof to: info@skgabc.com

Proof of completion of 'Alternative' On-Going Training (non-SKGABC activities) can be submitted with any of the following:

  • Course completion certificate
  • Course transcript
  • Receipt of enrollment and participation
  • Letter of completion from instructor

The SKGABC Certification Committee will consider alternative options on a case by case basis.
